About Laguna Garzón Wetland

Laguna Garzón Wetland is a coastal lagoon located between the departments of Maldonado and Rocha in southeastern Uruguay. This protected wetland area lies near the Atlantic Ocean, serving as an important ecological buffer between terrestrial and marine environments. The lagoon covers a modest area of brackish water, fed by small rivers and tidal flows, creating a diverse habitat for a wide variety of aquatic and terrestrial species. The wetland supports numerous bird species, including migratory and resident waterfowl, waders, and raptors, making it a prime destination for birdwatchers. It also plays a critical role in maintaining local biodiversity and water quality.

The wetland gained increased public attention with the construction of the Laguna Garzón circular bridge, a unique architectural landmark that connects both sides of the lagoon and encourages slow traffic and pedestrian use to promote environmental mindfulness. Visitors enjoy exploring the natural surroundings via marked paths and casual hiking, experiencing peaceful wildlife observation away from urban centers. Key recreational activities revolve around photography, birdwatching, and enjoying the quiet coastal environment. The lagoon's proximity to Punta del Este and José Ignacio provides access to cultural and culinary attractions, complementing the outdoor experience.

Conservation efforts have focused on habitat preservation and limiting human impact, ensuring the wetland remains a refuge for native flora and fauna. While the Laguna Garzón Wetland is not a formal national park or reserve, it is recognized locally for its environmental importance and scenic beauty. Its relatively untouched landscape offers a tranquil escape for nature enthusiasts in Uruguay’s growing ecotourism circuit.
